Virtuoso string playing has always been at the heart of pieces arranged for small ensembles. Writing in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Russian composers featured on this program explore the devotion and hopelessness of love. Rachmaninoff and Borodin showcase the piano and string instruments with soaring lyricism and power. The program finishes with Glière’s melodic Octet.
